For those here who do have an interest in Ayn Rand, the role of philosophical ideas in the rise of fascist politics in Germany is described in Leonard Peikoff's The Ominous Parallels. He researched and wrote the book in response to the rise of the New Left in the late 1960s and early 70s when he (and Ayn Rand) saw the similarities in fundamental premises in this country. German fascism was not a secret criminal conspiracy operating in an intellectual vacuum and neither is the trend in American culture and politics today.

The rise of extremism

When people are unemployed, hungry and desperate, as millions were in Germany between 1930 and 1933, they often turn to extreme political parties offering simple solutions to their problems. Between 1930 and 1933 support for the extreme right-wing Nazis and the extreme left-wing communists soared.

By 1932 parties committed to the destruction of the Weimar Republic held 319 seats out of a total of 608 in the Reichstag, with many workers turning to communism. However, the real beneficiaries were the Nazis.

The most obvious consequence of this collapse was a huge rise in unemployment. Over the winter of 1929-30 the number of unemployed rose from 1.4 million to over 2 million. By the time Hitler became Chancellor in January 1933 one in three Germans were unemployed, with the figure hitting 6.1 million. Industrial production had also more than halved over the same period.

This law required AP to hire reporters who also worked for the Nazi party’s propaganda division. One of the four photographers employed by the Associated Press in the 1930s, Franz Roth, was a member of the SS paramilitary unit’s propaganda division, whose photographs were personally chosen by Hitler. AP has removed Roth’s pictures from its website since Scharnberg published her findings, though thumbnails remain viewable due to “software issues”.

June 1941, Nazi troops invaded the town of Lviv in western Ukraine. Upon discovering evidence of mass killings carried out by Soviet troops, German occupying forces had organised “revenge” pogroms against the city’s Jewish population.

Franz Roth’s photographs of the dead bodies inside Lviv prisons were selected upon Hitler’s personal orders and distributed to the American press via AP.

“Instead of printing pictures of the days-long Lviv pogroms with its thousands of Jewish victims, the American press was only supplied with photographs showing the victims of the Soviet police and ‘brute’ Red Army war criminals,” Scharnberg told the Guardian.

Me dino liked Silverado second best. Recall movie critics heralding Silverado to be the first western to come along after a few years.
What I never saw written was that far too many often drab and/or ridiculous Spaghetti Westerns (started by a far superior Clint Eastwood trilogy by director Sergio Leone) cranked out by Italy and usually shot in Spain had completely burned out interest in going to see a Western. Of Costner filcks, I liked Silverado best. Bull Durham was about equal to FoD. Draft Day wasn't horrible, but For The Love Of the Game was better.
