"The rapid degeneration of our present age – when men are brought to the level of concrete-bound animals who are incapable of perceiving abstractions, when men are taught they must look at trees, but never at forests – makes it necessary for me to give the following warning: do not be misled by those who tell you that We the Living is no longer relevant."

"I explain the philosophical, psychological and moral meaning of the men who value their own lives and of the men who don’t. I show the first are prime movers of mankind, and the second are metaphysical killers, working for an opportunity to become physical ones. In We the Living I show they are motivated by a life premise or a death premise."

Certainly Kira did not find most people to be worthy adults. I think Rand found incontrovertible evidence of precious in each child, an untapped resource for self-worth, if I'm using those terms correctly.

methinks you may be straying onto soft ground here. Many if not most of the individuals I encounter could hardly be properly described as "precious" nor "worthy" - worthy of what? I would rather think that the moral/ethical/ social/legal system should be founded on the premise of self ownership, regardless of how despicable any given self may be.

I'll agree on the second. One has to define "god" before attempting to claim the first.

Yes, and the challenge with this project is to use the example of Kira Argounova to prove that sacrificing oneself to either God or Society is the same thing.

One of the things that socialism/communism does is to try to deny the value of individual life. We see it in all of their policies from forced abortion to forced groupthink. Men become slaves to their beneficent tyrant leaders. Only the premise that each individual is precious and worthy can result in a defensible, moral cause.

Thanks, I've not heard of Norman Dodd and will watch this. Having said that, I suspect the communist foothold is rooted in academia and politics being friendly to collectivist ideas. Individualism, after all, takes effort.

I started reading We The Living after reading Atlas Shrugged twice ,the Fountainhead and Anthem.
I could not finish it because I found it too depressing. I already knew the big lie , and how a Marxist Govt destroyed individuals and murdered any dissenters that opposed the oppression. What I can’t understand is how the US gave them a foothold here. Well that’s not true. I learned how they did from Norman Dodd. If you are curious he will tell you...https://youtu.be/8RgRGWlDo70
