California wants to own its own refinery! What would Ellis Wyatt think?

California policymakers are considering state ownership of one or more oil refineries to ensure a reliable supply of gasoline as the number of refineries in the state declines.

An oil industry trade group questions whether the state would have the expertise to effectively run a refinery, citing a lack of “understanding of the industry and how it works.”

Russia. China. Venezuela. Iran. More than a dozen countries make gasoline at state-owned refineries.

Could California be next on the list?

Unless they buy one already running, it will take 30 years for them to decide where it should be built.

As a contract process programmer I had a contract at the Chevron refinery near Oakland for a job that lasted about a month. Great people to work with on the job and a good place to work, but Oakland is a place I will never go back to. I hope Commiefornia doesn't turn Chevron into Oakland.

After making life hard on the refineries via regulations and fines they want to do this. I hope they give the refineries to them and they come in to find the place is made out of paper mache.

Here's a thought. Wait until the land around DC hits bottom, buy it up, re-wild it as a protected zone restricting travel and occupancy, under a private partnership.

    A gulch maybe.

I had a business that did that, but Obama convinced enough of my customers to take solar energy freebies. Your comment is part of my shrug story.

The 'refinery' will probably specialize in converting used fryer oil to use in biodiesel engines.
Construction cost will be over $100 billion and they'll expect the fedgov to cover their losses like TBTF banks.
How could 45 million fast food customers be wrong?

That reminds me that I need to talk to the student about her family. She has some major health problems that are the main subject when I talk to her.

Ellis Wyatt: Gonna buy lots of stock in Orville Redenbacher, watch the show for a while and then offer 10% to buy up after development and run the place.

Venezuela was a wealthy country that used to send about 10 students per year to my university. There is one such student left at my university. Her parents left to go to Panama. When her dad went back to tend to his elderly mother, they arrested him.

Hah, after reading the title and the first line of your post the first thought in my head was "Venezuela", but I see you beat me to it.

The article cited two reasons for gasoline consumption in the state declining. Reason #3 was left out: people leaving the state, especially the kind needed to run a refinery.

At least the state can sue itself if anything goes wrong.
