There's a Woody Harrelson interview in Friday's (Nov 21) USA Today. Harrelson states "I don't believe in government...I think we can all take care of ourselves." Does anyone know if he is a fan of Ayn Rand?

"The only proper purpose of a government is to protect man’s rights, which means: to protect him from physical violence. A proper government is only a policeman, acting as an agent of man’s self-defense, and, as such, may resort to force only against those who start the use of force. The only proper functions of a government are: the police, to protect you from criminals; the army, to protect you from foreign invaders; and the courts, to protect your property and contracts from breach or fraud by others, to settle disputes by rational rules, according to objective law." -- Ayn Rand

The only problem I see with that is that it's granting "government" an exclusive monopoly on force, and that's how the whole ball of wax eventually starts. Unfortunately, true Anarchy requires a moral people and I don't think the human race has evolved that far. :(

The Apple didn't didn't fall far from the tree. He's the son of Charles Harrelson, who was convicted of killing a federal judge.

Ayn Rand believed in government. She just didn’t believe in an intrusive government. Woody sounds a little like an anarchist.
