I've got an M1D chambered in '06', a couple of the old 1911s and a newer Springfield XD in .45, and my M24 with a Millet 6-25x56. I prefer to win before they even know you're there.
M24 is definitely a reach out and touch someone gun, with quite the smack down.
I am, like this author partial to the PTR91 for the .308 round. The gun just works, has no real failures and is pretty accurate as well.
For a .223 I am partial to Bushmaster AR15 M4. Good for those close in situations. I do not like a scope on mine as its intended for shorter ranges.
A good old .45 is always good in a handgun. I am a Glock fan which means I am use to a slightly different angle in the grip. I love Glocks but they have a downside of having a different grip angle than every other handgun which ruins you in other handguns (I shoot high with anything else)
When the chips are down and the zombies are in the streets, I'll take my M24 for the 'reach out and touch someone' crowd, M1 for the inside 500m crowd, and a good old .45 for "honey, someone's at the door".
