I'm pleased to meet you, DrZarkov99. You are indeed correct that ARPA created the Internet, but without the NASA work to launch the first satellites and rockets, there would have been no immediate need for ARPANET. This falls under "necessity being the mother of invention".

This is what happens when you take a bunch of intellectuals and take away the Space Shuttle, forcing America to hitch a ride with the Russians to visit the "International Space Station." Technically you are correct, but the need for such faster, more secure military communications came from the need to communicate with space vehicles. The "much larger program" you allude to did include quite a few NASA people here at Kennedy Space Center.

Of course ARPANET is not really the Internet either. The Internet, as we know it today, like most technologies is a group of inventions, which are still increasing/changing. ARPANET defined the transport system on which the Internet is built.

The internet was not the result of NASA research. It came from a DoD program, called ARPANET (after the D0D's research element, the Advanced Projects Research Agency, now called DARPA). It was part of a much larger program to provide faster, more secure military communications. ARPANET provided for worldwide connectivity, and when a UK scientist created hypertext, the internet was the result. I was one of the first users of ARPANET, as the first director of a classified operational military satellite program.

NASA does offend me, even though I teach the rocket scientists at Florida Tech. However, it doesn't offend me as much as most government programs. We have a surprisingly large number of things that we take for granted because of NASA-sponsored programs, most notably Internet communication.
