Proud of their distinct language and culture, a growing number of Catalonia's 7.5 million citizens resent the redistribution of their taxes to other parts of Spain and believe the region would be better off on its own.

As badly as Spain has spiraled into debt, it is amazing that the Spanish have allowed him to remain in power as long as he has. The Spanish are a long way from the era of their acquisition of the gold and silver in the then "New World". Now that money has left them, I am reminded of Francisco d'Anconia, "Money is the barometer of a society's virtue."

Philip II and his ill-fated Grand Armada in 1588 squander much of that wealth. Much as quixotic ventures by us in the middle east have squandered much of ours.

Well now. This puts an interesting spin on my upcoming trip to Spain, (next week!)...
If I have any problems, at least some people will know I'm there....
