I was asked by a female business owner why I would not join a social service club in which she is active. I told her I was not an altruist. She truly looked blank, even thought well-educated. She knows I will help people, help themselves, but draw the line at outright helping people not once, but repeat moochers. If only everyone grew up or grew into reading Rand.

Charity and altruism are not the same thing. In her 1964 Playboy interview Ayn Rand said, "My views on charity are very simple. I do not consider it a major virtue and, above all, I do not consider it a moral duty. There is nothing wrong in helping other people, if and when they are worthy of the help and you can afford to help them. I regard charity as a marginal issue. What I am fighting is the idea that charity is a moral duty and a primary virtue."

Yaron Brook just said that he has nothing against charity and philanthropy. Maybe he needs to re-read Rand on altruism.
