"Proposition 57 will change this and make our communities safer.
Please join me in support of a smarter approach to public safety that will save taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. Vote Yes on Proposition 57."
The problem is, Proposition 57 didn’t tell voters what is considered a “non-violent” crime. According to a fact check put out by the Association of Deputy District Attorneys, non-violent in California can mean:
•Assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer
•Battery with serious bodily injury
•Solicitation to commit murder
•Inflicting corporal injury on a child
•First degree burglary
•Raping an unconscious person
•Human trafficking involving a minor
•Participation in a street gang
•Exploding a destructive device w/ intent to cause injury (yes, setting off a bomb in a public place)

    Oklahoma ran into the same problem with their proposed changes to sentencing guidelines in an effort to reduce the societal and fiscal cost of "excessive" incarceration. Many criminal acts currently carried on OK books as "non-violent" include some forms of spousal or child abuse, for example, though none so outrageous as the California crimes. Fortunately these issues were brought up during legislative debate, and are being corrected before being sent to the governor.

    OK - so we release the bad guys and have our Second Amendment trashed by Brown. Glad i don't live in California. The exodus will continue.

    What most people do not understand is that the entire purpose of a penal system is supposed to be about reforming the convicted so they can rejoin society as a productive and law-abiding citizen. That usually takes time as well as a focus on actually helping inmates change. But the penal system also serves as a deterrent (of degrees) or disincentive to commit certain acts. Reducing the sentencing will only invalidate these disincentives and encourage more crime.

    If I were living in California and I hadn't already moved, I would be getting out of there ASAP. "Escape from LA" is about to become reality...

    Sooooooo glad I escaped the asylum two and a half years ago. Except for SF and LA most folks in the PDRC are generally on the conservative side. However, the large population masses in SF & LA skew the state towards the insane left.
