Fitting how they chose the Prius. Here in the US they are generally occupied by mindless drivers. At least the UK made a preemptive strike and determined that they would be better off with no driver in them at all. (14.5 mpg and damn proud of it)

Your memory is correct, edweaver. The AZ company that sells the red light cameras definitely has a crony deal with local governments, and I think I remember there being a state government incentive program as well.

I agree and it appears they are rigged by the companies that install them. I don't remember the exact details but had to do with bonuses for catching drivers. More cronyism.

Around here a couple of years ago, there was a lawsuit over a father getting points on his license for running a red light when it was actually his son driving the car. Red light cameras are a curse.

How do I bet against the insurance companies that choose to insure these driverless cars?

I foresee "With Folded Hands" in our future.

The Fox News article said that the reason for promoting the driverless cars was to cut down on human error causing accidents.

In "With Folded Hands", robots told people they couldn't drive themselves because their reflexes weren't as good as a robot's, and therefor it was too dangerous. Along with everything else humans wanted to do for themselves.

(man, if there's a story aching to be made into a movie, this is it...)
