First DQ in 145 years of Derby History

Maximum Security, a very talented horse, veered out approaching home, interfering with another horse in the 4th path. Then he veered back to the rail, interfering with another one.

He was taken down by the stewards, correctly. It was fortunate that tragedy did not happen, clipping heels and unseating riders. The 145th Debry could have become a nightmare race for years to remember.

The president tweeted:

“The Kentucky Derby [sic] decision was not a good one. It was a rough and tumble race on a wet and sloppy track, actually, a beautiful thing to watch. Only in these days of political correctness could such an overturn occur. The best horse did NOT win the Kentucky Derby—not even close!”.

I am very sorry he said that. It was an ignorant statement that had nothing to do with how the race was run.

I back Trump in everything else but he should not have made this comment: it generated uncalled for sentiments that were completely unfounded.

I have to laugh at a 65 to 1 horse winning the Derby. I would have pulled my horse instead of letting him run on a muddy, sloppy track. Would it have been unthinkable to reset the date of the Derby? Horses are too valuable to risk like this.

    It was not deliberate blocking.

It does not have to be deliberate to cause a DQ.

Apparently Max Security jumped a puddle then veered out sharply. He affected the momentum of the horse behind him and photos show it was a miracle they did not clip heels.

There is an argument that there was still time to recoup for the affected horses but it does not work that way in racing.

When you are running full out and your momentum is arrested, it is not only time which is lost but the psychological effect to overcome the disturbance and build momentum again.

If Maximun Security had block one horse he might have not received the DQ. Stuff happens in a very competitive race like this. But multiple occurences (3) is a little too much like deliberate blocking. I wonder if the jockey had anything to do with it? I don't know horse racing, but I would think the jockey controls a lot of what happens. Correct me if I'm wrong please.
