"So all the appliances are brand new and none are nearly as good as the ones from 20-30 years ago. I long for a washer that actually gets the clothes clean. (Further) more often than not the washer does not work because it is sensing how much laundry is in there so it uses the proper amount of water. And it errors out. All the time. My mom’s washer in the 1960’s had 3 levels of water you could choose and the thing washed clothes like a beast.
And then there are the pricey lightbulbs that don’t work.
All the technology we have and we have to suffer along with gadgets that are impaired by legislation."

Politicians need to do something to prove their existence.
Looking scum.
Speed Queen. Request the model with an all metal drivetrain and the "clicky dial"! I bought mine 2 years ago. Instead of 2 cycles of 2 heavily soiled work clothes I now load 3 sets in one load.....clean.
Alliance Laundry is in process of opening new production facilities in Manitowoc WI. Soon to employ upward of 250 new occupations. I know this first hand as I watch the Manitowoc Crane facility converted to new tenancy.
So I've been looking online for a new machine, though I had actually hoped to nurse along my washer/dryer/refrigerator for 3 more years when we move...leaving them all behind and buying new when arrive back to The Promised Land (aka Texas). Anyway, I might not make it that long with the washer...it's not looking good.
I did find some Speed Queen washers online that are far more expensive than any of the other brands, but given that my daddy, who owned five laundromats throughout my home town (back in the sixties), ALL of which were Speed Queen washers...it likely will be well worth it. Whatever washing machine I buy, I hope for it to be the last one I ever have to get! Anyway, can't wait to read the rest of this topic, but wanted to thank you for the thumbs-up on Speed Queen. It's probably what I will end up with.
I dread the day my 1982 side-by-side refrigerator quits. It doesn't have a water dispenser or ice maker. Just plug it in and it works. Nothing extra to break down or hook up. Newer ones won't last that long and are so expensive to fix you may as well throw them out to a land fill and buy a new one.
Same for the washer and dryer. I hate those front loading washers. They stink, too, as I found out from others who own them. I'm dreading the day my older Kenmore models break down.
Shower heads? Don't get me started! Tried a new water saver and threw it out after 3 days. I want a 5 min clean shower, not 20 minute misting to get the soap off.
MAGA-KAG! Trump 2020!!
Trump picks things to relate to people. I hope he is successful pulling the bureaucracy back into constitutional control. Very tough to do.
I read Giuliani's book "Leadership" and wonder if Trump did as well. Rudy's technique of combating the rampant crime in NYC was to start by crushing the small irritating stuff and use that as a lever to dry up the bigger stuff and it worked. Maybe Trump is making an effort to go after the bureaucracies and regulators of the small irritating stuff like screwy dishwasher and shower head rules et al and use that as a lever to eradicate some of the bigger stuff. We'll see...
Edit add: Speaking of entrenched bureaucratic entitlement, nothing illustrated that more than the pure contempt for the taxpayer Piglosi had when ordering up 30 gold pens at $2500 a pop to commemorate her impeachment crap (that's a cool $75,000 taxpayer dollars flushed). If us taxpayers needed 30 pens a trip to the Dollar Tree for 3 ten-packs would have to do!
Piglosi's "Gold Pen Gate" is so outrageous it is off the chart. Note they are working increasingly in that realm, e.g. shed even the appearance of legality. That is an indication of two things: 1) They know that the DS is alive and well and nothing can touch them, or 2) it is a sign of their final days, knowing that Durham is going to yank the veil off their abuses.
Now let's see what Durham will come up with.
We are told over and over that "justice will be served" but all we see is the vermin getting more and more entrenched.
It is getting more and more difficult to incinerate them
Exactly the case.
We keep stewing ourselves in recognizing the status quo but the left is doing its thing undisturbed..
We have been told for 3 years now that the "day of reckoning" is near but it is like saying "it is coming soon" and saying it for years.
I don't believe the GOP will dismiss the impeachment charade in the Senate, either.
Aid and comfort to the enemy = treason
My dishwasher, purchased only 3 years ago, was a Maytag and I bought it because it was supposed to be QUIET. That was the main selling point. Would you believe we can only run it at night because it has a grinding noise that feels and sounds like nails on a chalkboard? We actually had the motor replaced under warranty, which lasted .....3 months, about time for the warranty to run out....and now it's back. Not to mention that the dishes sometimes come out dirtier than they went in!
Edit add: Can you imagine if we left the door closed and went away for a week? My water bill would be enormous!
The fridge's motor is on all the time, buzzing non-stop. I called a guy who said that it is a small motor and it needs working all the time to get the temp at set level.
Now the shower heads: in CA they come "pre-programmed", e.g. they have a tiny piece installed that reduce the flow. The result is a limp stream of water that makes you cringe when taking a shower b/c you don't feel being cleaned at all. So the trick is to open the head and remove that little bastard so that you feel a decent splashing on your back.
We resolved the "bulb" issue (when regulators ordered us to use the filament type vs old fashioned bulbs that do not give you the light even for reading) by purchasing a stock of the bulb when they were still available and we are still using those.
I'll be crying a river when the ol' Kenmore breaks down and I have to buy one of the new-fangled front loading machines. My wife insists I'm going to have to go to the junk yard to find parts before that, LOL!
A few years before my father in law passed away in Florida he had to get a new washer/dryer set and my sister in law talked him into a new front loader pair for a little under $3000! Ouch. Anyway, when visiting, my wife went to use it for the first time and was not impressed. Now, she is not one to express herself using foul language - especially in the presence of her dad - but she came storming into the house and exclaimed, "What the hell is wrong with that god-damned machine that it can't even wash a pair of pants!? I can do them by hand in the sink better than that stupid thing!". We all went into shock! She was much calmer after her dad gave a quick "how to" lesson, but what ever happened to simple "throw in the laundry, turn the knob, and press the button"? The manual had a whole bunch of option settings for super wash stuff and all you have to do is set it up - I'm glad the NASA Space Center was just down the coast in case we needed some serious advice! LOL! I have no problem with doing laundry at home, but there I was more comfortable painting dads' shed out back or cleaning gutters in 100 degree heat with mosquitoes and biting gnats than fooling with those $3000 modern marvels. LOL!
The working horse of washers/driers!
The private sector response is interesting-
designers, US, German, Japanese .. have made good technical advances, manufacturing in China, Turkey .. is getting efficient as well as cheap. But that response is driven by competition, the government regulations are a constraint partly covered up by technical advances.
Yes, light-bulbs, motor vehicles, .. same.
And don't get me started on the washing machine and dryer (both front-loaders) where the front door latches busted and we have to hold them closed using buckets of something heavy (I haven't looked to see what it is). Despite this being a "high-capacity" setup, we do three-four loads every day.
I'd also add one other major "appliance" that government regulations have effectively ruined: the automobile! They're for getting from one place to another. Now there's so much pollution-management in them that you lose 20% efficiency and new cars start out at $40K for a sedan, $60K for a truck, and $80K for an SUV. They're so expensive you have loan terms out eight years. I really don't need automatic locks or windows, remote start, heated seats, in-dash navigation or collision-detection. I don't need backup sensors (that's what my eyes are for), lane-drift sensors, or most of the other expensive electronics. I don't even want an automatic transmission (love the feel of the manual and a replacement of $800 vs $6000 for an auto is a winning bet to me)!
I heartily agree. That's why I drive a 20th century model. Paid cash when it was only 15 years old. As you said, fewer superfluous gadgets to break down, too.
(Sorry to hear of your other mechanical challenges, too.)
