Perspective on Ferguson, MO and the civilian use of force.

Many people scoff at the idea that an over militarized police force could threaten our civil liberties. Many people scoff at the idea that society is always 3 days away from anarchy given the right conditions. If only we had a recent example that we could point to... We have evidence. Some people refuse to believe it.

Well, he had his hand up in the air. That to me seems like a signal that he wasn't a threat.

"Michael Brown may be a thug and a thief. He may have been under the influence of weed and possibly something else but he did not need to be shot 6 times."

    Yes he did.

"Why did you shoot him six times?"
    "I ran out of ammo".

The bastard was a physical monster who had the balls to punch a cop. Making him an even bigger threat to the general public.

I'm happy for all of his potential victims who will not not be robbed, raped, mugged or killed.

What firearms training should I have to justify shooting an unarmed man in the middle of the street? I know it is tough to be a cop in a blighted neighborhood but nothing has come to light that indicates that killing was the best option. I was discussing this with a local deputy sheriff and his perspective was that these guys reach the point that they just want to make it back home to their family each day. They see so much crime and murder up close and after awhile they suspect that each day may be the one the one that they don't make it through the shift. How long could you feel like that before you shot first and asked questions later? Who among your peers would condemn you for it?

CoalDigger, you made a categorical statement that Brown should not have been shot 6 times. What firearms training have you had and what is your evidence that Brown was not a threat?

Like you, I want a return to community policing.

Michael Brown may be a thug and a thief. He may have been under the influence of weed and possibly something else but he did not need to be shot 6 times. Local police are there to protect the rights of all parties which includes the alleged perpetrator. An unarmed person is not such a threat to the safety of others that they should be subjected to lethal force. An intelligent officer would have called for backup, stayed within visual contact and with help, taken the suspect into custody. He was being a cowboy and now we have a national crisis.

Local police should always be a protector of people in the community they serve and the more military-like they become the less they will be seen as a positive force. Riots, organized crime, terrorist acts, etc. need to be addressed by police units specifically trained for these situations and not involved is matters of the general public. Dirty Harry being the police, judge, jury and executioner needs to remain a fictional character.

Would a "liberal" defend the innocent armed only with their own innocence? Some of the opportunistic thugs do not care about innocence.

I'm amused at the attitude of some here.

    Here's my take on Ferguson...

You punch a cop, you're asking for four in the arm, two in the head.

Ask any liberal you know, if they would go defend Ferguson armed with only their mushy feelings.
