Where to eventually retire?

I will turn 50 soon. I'm stuck in Illinois for another 10 years until my children are done with school (divorced).
I've been casually looking for states to live and work for some more years until I retire. So far, I'm considering Kentucky, Arkansas, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma.
I was wondering if anyone else is living in a permanently blue state and has relocated to a better state.

Our county is considering borrowing money to fix the roads and is about to enact a wheel tax. They want 15 million to build a new nursing home and now our local school wants 48 million to build new. All this in one year in a country of 24,000. This will cost me in the vacinity of $3000 in additional property tax per year for my house & business. There has to be something better or it may be time to become a John Galt.| Permalink
