A war for liberty cannot be won without a hiding place. Only a frontier, providing isolation and resources without proprietors, can provide such a hiding place. It's what enabled the Founders.
From scratch, it's not an easy thing. See The League of the Brick Moon on Facebook for a solution.
we built a rancher on a basement which is buried in the side of a ... gulch. . stays in the 60s down there, and a stash of food and water plus batteries, a generator and a woodstove make it hospitable.
with our spare million, we plan to put in a well and have it manned with servants.

Yes, the comment about running for con-gress was a joke on how expensive it is, especially given how unproductive. Unfortunately being 'intelligent' does not necessarily mean wealthy in money tokens. Wisdom can be expensive. Thanks for the good wishes;^)
if you could afford calypso why the hell would you want to run for congress. having that much money would mean you pretty intelligent unless it was inheritance. I am to old to bother any more but I do care so I hope you get what you want.
Actually you can grow all you need hydrophonically. Cousteau did it on calypso 2 very successfully. also there are so many third world islands out there that the people could careless if someone new showed up. you see when rome goes their way of life doesn't change. and you would not always be looking behind you as in staying under the radar. I would very much like to see someone come a long who can give direction to the FOOLS who walk the halls of congress and show them the errors of their ways. Ayn Rand has spelled it out but no one in a position if someone is can do anything about it because they do not want to rock the boat.
As a last resort perhaps. I want land. I can't grow enough veg and fruit on a boat (unless it's a very very big boat, and that defeats the "living under the radar" goal.) The sea can be even more dangerous and unforgiving than the land.
the more i read what Ayn Rand wrote in her newsletters and books other than Atlas or the Fountainhead the more convinced i am that we will go the way of Rome. We are a socialist country today. The government has rid us of property rights and without then there is no capitalism and without capitalism we are all broke. now does the boat look like a viable alternative?
Remember that in "The Time Machine"' the Morlocks were the more intelligent, productive class, maintaining and running the machines and producing the food, shelter and clothing to keep their Eloi cattle alive and breeding.
I have always loved the idea of living on a sailboat. Its a long way to the hospital if/when you need it and security is a real problem. The reality is that plan is only avoiding the real problem by attempting to fly under the radar. imo, that is a temporary fix that will also disappear. Whatever the 'solution' there are always obstacles. I think that space is a lesser obstacle than politicians and bankers and dealing with them involves use of force... at present that would be suicidal, even higher risk than space travel. Eventually, either there will be war for liberty or those who want it will require a new frontier. That frontier will have to be out of reach of the statists.
I do agree with you. However, going to another planet as i think you are alluding too will not have what ever is necessary to sustain life. Based upon what i have been reading in the news today we in the USA are screwed. Having done it before, live on a boat, i recommend doing it as you can not spend money when you leave the dock. also, the wind is free, as i came acress many live aboards that removed their engines and had a little more storage, so an engine that uses fuel is unnecessary. that truly was the life, sometimes i regret having ended it.
not really, if you have your own jet, it says you only need to get to within 400 miles of it. On the other hand, depending on the driver to show up for the armored car job after the government collapsed and money is worthless... well...
This is a fad that's been in and out of style at least twice before. I remember hearing of a whole neighborhood of these things in Rogue River, OR. Don't know if they're still there.
If I wanted to "drop out" like that, I think I'd either go with seasteading or go to some country like Switzerland that allows the rich to buy residence there. That way when (not if) you become the target of looters, you can move on and avoid them.
Underground is an appropriate place for these rich mole people. At least they'll be out of sight, and hopefully, out of mind. Hmmm. Out of mind? By George, I've got it!
where would the space colony be? what would the benefits be? I for one and I suspect there are others who do not see a space colony in the distant future let a long the for see able future.
The illustration with the article reminded me of an Umbrella Corporation site in a Resident Evil movie, the DVDs I collect as a fan (I'm not a video gamer). Umbrella Corporation sites turn into death traps. While reading that article, I thought of earthquakes. Once I felt an Alabama prison tower shake and heard that an abandoned coal mine caved in.

Liberty via independence is the primary benefit that is not available anywhere on earth.
