I agree with you that paranoia can drive a person crazy.

In a situation where an authority imposes its political views and others are forming a "new club" in opposition, an obvious conflict arises. Any individual can be tempted to choose sides and trade loyalty to the group for benefits from the authority, by betraying the group. I do not see any conspiracy in that situation. Common sense, it seems to me, counsels recognition of the risk and prudence.

As I tried to say in my first comment, the whole situation is a poison to a healthy work environment. I have been there in my life. I chose to quit and found a way into "solving customer problems", practicing development engineering. What we developed is still the best in the world, 40 years hence.

The notion of community colleges is communist itself. Let's just abolish them (or at least cut their budget all we can) and let the market produce replacement(s) if any are called for. They'll work better for more people, and cost less too.

If you're like me, you never looked back and said, "I wish I could get that somewhat crappy I-guess-I-can-put-up-with-this job back." Every time I've taken a decision like this that I felt somewhat nervous about, I have *always* wondered why I didn't act sooner.

If you confronted the owners about it, you _might_ find they actually enjoy the discussion. They might just shut up about because they don't want turnover. You might even (although probably not) change their minds about something.
I strongly agree with rockymountainpirate that if they're that annoying, it's best to move on. There are too many interesting people, projects, and situations to work on to spend any time with people who carry on about politics or do anything too annoying.

Worrying about spies will drive you crazy. While some person wonders what your ideology is and a brownnoser spies, just create value and solve problems. I really don't understand how they can get anything done while spending time worrying about each other's personal beliefs. If you focus on being excellent at solving customer problems, you'll get better that. The conspiracy people will get better at politics.

I do not talk about this stuff with clients, employees, etc. They can probably figure out my wife and are both pro-BO.

I have a lawyer friend that recognized the opportunity from the mortgage crash, took the necessary training and is making BANK as a bankruptcy trustee, doing her job: legally taking possession of people's assets and selling them, all the while praising our POSPOTUS.
The job needs done and I can't blame her for making the bucks, but she seems to rationalize supporting socialist ideology while saying 'conservatives' are solely responsible for the crash, so she has selectively educated herself while conveniently ignoring the facts.
Says it's a miracle that she's a friend of mine and, to keep it civil amongst friends, I reply "thank God for miracles". But, I don't have to work with her.
I would try to get out of there as attorneys can justify anything. I'm sure we all know good ones that are good people, but nothing an attorney does surprises me.

They literally do not know what they do not know -- they have no understanding of the the essentials of logic. These people are lacking a sense of morality and essentially justify gang-rape with the endorsement of property redistribution at the point of a legislatively dictated gun. Their rape is done by proxy -- they do not sully their own hands, rather cast that responsibility on face-less bureaucrats. They work their evil with the general approval of their own conscience. Most cannot be changed as they are calcified in their orthodoxy. When I do encounter one of these creatures, I do my best to retain my composure and debate at an even pace and decibel. I realize that my words, directly, are falling on deaf ears. My only hope is that a bystander in the group can see that logic, reason and basic morality do exist and that there is a working alternative to the envy-intoxicated mind-numbing nonsense proposed by socialists.
