I'm very proud of you. Yes, it is people who don't create their own capacity to think who indulge in judgementalism instead of judgement calling...which is the result of that person developing critical thinking skills.
Teri, you might very well be right, but I'd prefer to think, believe (and hope) that those are actually Learned Responses and might be able to be Unlearned if the 'students' are caught at an early enough age.
I'm actively trying to 'unpoison the mind' of my 'step-grandson' out of some of the assumptions he's been bathed in by his fairly liberal parents for about 14+ years, now.
Fortunately, he's VERY bright and inquisitive on his own and loves our discussions where we ask LOTS of questions about LOTS of subjects.
The injections of Socratic Method seem to be working well...
Find folks and vaccinate them with it. There may be hope for some future generation. As for current MSM, politicians and 'joe average American,' I think the battle was lost a few decades ago. Critical Thinking, as I describe it, died somewhere around the '80s or '90s.
And thus was it ever. The shock value and actual importance of teen-agers doing something ignorant and stupid should be nil. The Republic will stand.
Having said that, the fact that this particular stupidity has serious political undertones, and that somebody at a major news organization decided to treat it as "news", does say something about the culture, and should be discussed.
Good grief... What is in their minds? I wonder. Are they making fun of Communism or are they celebrating it. Is it both? What is the breakdown? Perhaps they are hoping to prepare for a position in the next "Brain Trust." Galt help us... I hope somebody helps them out and removes all the toilet paper in the restrooms...
Your assessment of human behavior when it comes to "worst-case-scenario- jumping-to- conclusions" is human nature. It takes time, effort and patience to achieve knowledge, wisdom and depth. Most folks don't invest the time.
The only thing collective about that group is they are all, apparently, collectively stupid. Must be the first batch of Kommon Kore graduates to go to Kollege...
My comment on that link.. [ Hold on, this is waiting to be approved by CBS Las Vegas. ]
"And the station's comments section is now closed...
But nowhere in the alleged 'news report' did I see ANYTHING that elaborated on what the students had envisioned in that 'theme' nor anything resembling a message they were trying to convey!
So, all in all, virtually EVERY comment on the station's site, and from what I've seen here,... ALL of you have created IN your OWN MINDS, pictures and stories of WTF this 'plan' MEANS to EVERYONE involved or NOT involved, and you are ALL reacting to Those Pictures!
Are you all crazy?
No, I don't think crazy is the right word, but I've seen too many contemporaries do exactly the same thing... Hear about an event, create a scenario in their minds about what it means and how it MIGHT affect them, and then react violently to their imagined 'danger' resulting from the hypothetical outcome of the 'screenplay' they wrote IN their Minds!
Wait... I take it back... I think that IS some kind of 'crazy.' "
Winter wind: Yes, you are right that the responsibility is spread out over the various categories you listed. However, just like what we all discuss here in the Gulch, to see how our government keeps spiraling further into Socialism and even though there are many who are completely against this - few take action to initiate change to the beast of the system.
Here too, the non action is applicable. Schools are known to be hot beds of leftist thinking. Parents are often not informed, don't take the time to investigate or don't take it seriously when the school propagates leftist ideals. So, with the already leftist tendencies of the government added to those of the schools what choices/examples do these students have to escape this stronghold? I have remained shocked over the great number of students that voted for "0" not just one time but the second too.
not ONLY the educators. the parents. the legislators. the STUDENTS. the general public. Just because you present a fact to a student, he won't necessarily learn it. Yes, I know it's a climate, but more people than the students, if they had cared to, could have found out what was going on in schools and begun the protest about it.
I'm annoyed by everyone who says that some problem in schools is ONLY due to the actions of the educators. That implies that the teachers unscrew the student's left ear, insert a funnel and the Magic Hose of Knowledge, and turn the valve. The Knowledge goes in and makes itself at home, and no one ever gets a tiny view of what was in the hose. C'mon, folks.
It's not unusual to find the beginnings of true believers stemming from the intellectual intelligentsia and with a well off background. Not everyone can afford to send their offspring to those schools. What you will find very little of are the offspring of blue collar working class except perhaps in countries which send theirs off to higher education no matter if they can''t add, subtract, or write a complete sentence. Instead they learn esteem is a valid replacement for excuse and haven't a clue about respect. The mathematical proof goes like this. X + Y = Z plus e r o or put another way sad.

Vietnam is still officially communist, and I think Cambodia is, too. Not sure about Bolivia (they elected a friend of Chavez, but that was several years ago & I don't know if he's still in).
I think the article implied that a lot of the kids did it as a "goof" (I know dumb kids like that), not because they wanted to be Communists, just PO the administration. But it also sounded like significant number pretty much knew what they were doing, at least to the extent of their ignorant, immature understanding of what Communism is. Too smart by half...
North Korea, Cuba and what was the other one - now that China has gone socialist capitalist? I'm sure there is someplace I missed. Venezuela? Perhaps the slogan of the prom could be 'Lessons in Self-Marginalization." Ah Hell how could I forget there talking about the Moscow on the Potomac and the Congressional Comrades.
It's a good thing that I'm so old that my kids and grandkids are no longer in school. If they were, and this were going on I would be all over them, and their teachers and their administrators. And I am sure I could get a few dozen parents to accompany me.
I agree. The only good thing in the article was the sophomore who didn't think it was funny. It's not.
It reminds of a true story of a friend taking an "Education" class at The University of Michigan. (For those of you not aware, U of M was the birthplace of the SDS in the 60's, and makes most Left Coast schools look Centrist. Imagine their Education School).
In any case, this particular "educator", at the beginning of the term gave everyone in class a choice of grading method: the Communist or the Capitalist. "If you choose the former, you'll get a "B". If you choose the latter, you take your chances. And by the way, I don't give 'A's.".

I wonder if he teaches in New Mexico now?
