" Well, check your premises: maybe those Federal goodies shouldn't be there in the first place."
Yes. This is why I imagine some politicians are thinking, "Crap, this was a great wedge issue. I could send out letters about gays that generate reliable contributions. Not only could that go away, but it might lead to losing Federal goodies. This is all veggies and no empty calories of a good urban-vs-rural mindless brawl. Can we please have gov't-sanctioned marriage!"

I agree. Marriage is basically a business deal, each partner with their own rights and responsibilities. Yes I know there are emotions involved.

I certainly think this is a valid and rational way to go. And OF COURSE the main counterargument is "oh, golly, look at the Federal goodies we might lose". Well, check your premises: maybe those Federal goodies shouldn't be there in the first place. And, BTW, hasn't that been the exact argument against States opting out of Common Core? (And yet they still are, thankfully). I mean The Feds threatening to withhold education funds. Even is you ignore the religious/clergy issue, a marriage is still a contract between two parties. No license should be required.
