Science requires that you evaluate things, generally to a number. Now you can argue that the particular evaluation generates a number that isn't particularly useful, but if you argue against assigning a number then you are arguing against the scientific method.

All though my schooling in the 60's and 70's, I took standardized tests. They went in my 'permanent record', they were used to evaluate my ability to get a scholarship, and to get in college. While some complained about the fact that they might be race biased (a whole different can of worms), there wasn't that much complaint.

What's different now? We are using tests to judge the school systems themselves and the teachers. Suddenly they no longer are valid.

Ok, let's fix them but don't tell me we can't measure what you do and then ask me to spend a trillion dollars on it.

I think the argument is more of the Common Core senseless ness testing, and the fact the curriculum is now geared to "teach the test". That method invalidates any form of testing to measure actual knowledge and skill, it measures your ability to learn the test. Common Core is a total mess, with pseudo babble injected into logic that ends up being absolutely undecipherable. Several threads here on it. Some interesting videos too, where they take 9 minutes to add 2 numbers.
