People are sick of politicians who guard everything they utter and filter it in fear of "offending someone" - that's why it's called "political correctness". Trump just doesn't give a darn about what people think of him, and speaks what's on his mind, not what is considered "politic" at any given point. And because of that "frank honesty" he portrays as his image, people flock to him... they feel that instead of being a weak leader bending to what everyone else wants, he'll stand on his own. Right, wrong, or otherwise, for once, what you see is what you get. People LIKE that.
It's the same reason Sanders took off on the left - most libs were afraid to be known as the socialists they are; Sanders proclaims it loudly. It reads as honest... even if you despise socialism for the scourge it is, at least you know where this guy stands.
The American people have had it with phony, sniveling, and lying politicians that will say and hide anything to try to get elected... and rely on over-edited, reworked, and molded canned answers and teleprompted speeches engineered to allegedly "appeal" to the broadest audience while offending no-one.
The GOP's been out of touch for years. Trump has pounced on the opportunity. There was no way the GOP was going to beat Hillary, or whoever else the Dems were going to run. No way.
