My Letter to my Gun-Free Gym - Rachel Mills

I find the "Gun-Free" signs to be ridiculous. To me, it's similar to yelling "Don't look!"

The author of this letter, found at the Liberty.me site, writes rather honestly. I believe this adds even more impact to her letter.

Excellent! You can't argue with facts or reason. Well, some will.

when he is out of office and people talk about his legacy, he will be remembered as the greatest gun salesman ever as well as the guy who worked diligently to destroy the USA.

That is correct. Virtually no one carries; they just 'have'. (My sister lived in Switz for some decades.)

Perhaps some 'helpful' person should take a look at the font and point size of the 'gun free zone sign' and print out a look-alike addendum with that text on it. And then just kinda 'adhere' the new sign to the wall below the old one.

Hopefully, Tom, the actual criminal would be dead...which is in 'more trouble' than being guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.

    Good Luck.

In Illinois carrying past one of the "Run by stupid people" signs is a Class 2 misdemeanor. That said the idea of 'concealed' carry means who is to know?
I avoid those places - I do my banking at the drive through - and just do not frequent businesses with the signs. If I was ever caught needing to defend myself in one of the signed places I would, but would also expect to be in more trouble then the actual criminal. So it's best to stay out of them.

I think that would be irrelevant. If they state they are assuming liability and responsibility, there should be no qualifications. Good legal point, though.........

Would the owner's defense be "the murderer did not adhere to the management's rules, so the management cannot be held responsible?"

First of all, thank you for writing that killer letter. I shall unabashedly steal from it many times in the future. And, I am forwarding it to some people and places that need to read it -- providing you don't object. If your gym doesn't take notice, that is, at the very least respond, even with all the good they do, in the long run, you probably will be better off changing where you work out.
Your letter is one of the many reasons I love the Gulch.

"So the gun free zone signs mean nothing to these honest people." Well, the signs only mean, "target-rich environment", to dishonest people. I agree: Obama is the best gift that the firearms industry has had in decades and possibly forever.

Ok, how about this idea: The sign is a form of advertising. The statement on the sign is false. It may be their wish that it is a "gun free zone", but there is no way to absolutely enforce it, so it is false. The more true statement would be "Free fire zone." What follows will never happen, but it would be fun to start a class action suit against all businesses that advertise "gun free zones" and force them to also post a sign stating that it is also a free fire zone, enter at your own risk. I live in Utah. Recently I went to a restaurant with a sign stating that they support the second amendment, you are free to carry in the restaurant, but please keep your weapon holstered unless the need arises. In which case judicious markmanship will be appreciated.

    Bingo! Another version:
"Because this establishment does not allow customers to provide self protection devices upon the premises, the owners assume full responsibility and liability for your safety and security"

I've discovered the "real" reason for "gun free zones", like this and it has nothing to do with keeping bad guys out.

The real reason for this prohibition is that business owners (and many employers) are more concerned over the possibility of an "accidental discharge" than they are with a mass shooting. This was the reason I received when I posed the question (of allowing concealed carry) to our employees user group AND from the National Rifle Association when questioned about their policy of not allowing loaded firearms in sponsored classes.

So...not only do businesses not care about our personal defense...they also cannot trust us to not shoot ourselves in the foot, while on their property.

Being a naughty dino who does not want to be a target of opportunity, I carry a concealed pocket pistol into the gun free zone of my credit union for a bank all the time.
I have freindly chats with the armed credit union guard too, since I have been a bank guard and other kind of security guards off and on during my semi-retired period (2002 - 2013).
That credit union guard does not need to know what is in my pocket.
I'm only going to use that gun if I'm forced to.

That's a half truth half urban myth All members of the military keep their weapons at home for fast mobilization purposes. Mostly rifles. Still the effect is the same if a burglar does not know the resident.
