ABOUT THE ATLAS SOCIETY
The Atlas Society has been promoting Open Objectivism for the past 25 years. Their website (http://www.atlassociety.org) describes the concept of Open Objectivism as:

“Objectivism is not a religion with teachings defined by a sacred text like the Bible or Qur’an. Our loyalty is not to Rand’s words but to the truth of her fundamental insights. A commitment to truth and respect for independent thought must lead onward to new questions, new answers. Our scholars have produced insights in Objectivist philosophy, from the virtue of benevolence to the nature of knowledge, and more needs to be done.”

The annual “Atlas Summit” is just one of the many ways the Atlas Society works to engage the public with the ideas of Ayn Rand.

Perhaps one topic might be forming a viable coalition of the splinter groups or how to get out of the sand box and into long pants.

what I love about their shows-they are such fans of objectivity, they explain most of their tricks to the audience in slow motion with all the detail and then go on to re-perform it leaving you aghast! no other magician I know of does that-in fact, illusionists LOVE it when their audience embraces mysticism

Me, too. But I recently show their show in Vegas. I have their BS series io DVD, etc. Nice to see atheists and libertarians in show business who not hide it.

Last time for Vegas was the 40th Anniversary of SF sponsored by Soldier of Fortune mag. My first time in the unit was in 1966 it was just over ten years old and I was a raw newcomer at the Vegas meet I sat with one of the original 10th Group Day one guys and two of the current members. It was a shock to be asked what it was like back in the old days. I remember vividly participating in hymn singing with Col Maggie (Martha Raye...) and having General Stilwell bounce us out of the racks on Sunday mornings for one of his pine cone police calls. Funny the stuff that sticks in your mind from back in the old days.

I would think of Lost Wages and Renew as more into redistribution of wealth. The thrill is momentary and then it is gone. away. BUT I like the seafood buffets the best is Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks.

The opposite of capitalism is socialism or collectivism. Las Vegas is neither of these.

Las Vegas produces entertainment, ably filling a public demand. That's capitalism in action. Most visitors to Las Vegas realize that casinos are in business to make a profit. And what's wrong with consumption? All production of goods and services is ultimately aimed at consumers.

Okay, but like Francisco d'Anconia, smart people in Las Vegas are making money on the greed and ignorance of those people. Prostitution is legal. Guns are legal. Gambling is legal. Seems pretty free to me.

It is about consumption, not production. It is built on the irrationality of large numbers of people who do not understand probabilities

I used to go to the Liberty magazine editors conferences in Port Townsend WA when Bill Bradford was still running the magazine. It was a fantastic experience. I wish you had been there, too, Dale. The last one held there was the weekend after 9-11. They moved it to the site of freedomfest the next year, I think.

Unlike some, I love Vegas and look for any excuse to go. Used to live there back in the late 70's and have been back about 35-40 times since. Was just there over the holidays and look forward to going as I have not been to one of the Fests yet. I just registered and look forward to meeting all who are going. Plenty of hotels close by that are a little cheaper for those on a budget. I booked at the Super 8 right behind Planet Hollywood on Koval Lane, so close enough for me and it is half the cost of PH. I will have my truck there, so can get around town and visit with friends or go to other casinos and shows during down time. Plus monorail is right there also. If you want luxury, Bellagio, Aria, The Cosmo and the Vdara are right across the street and it is right next door to Paris and Bally's to the north. Vegas is the best escape and you can find anything to fit your budget and lifestyle.
