Making Gulch happen

I've always been interested in "utopian" societies and what would make them work. I read "Walden Two" and Skinner had some really great ideas. If i had money to burn I'd buy a bankrupt builders community and tweek it into Walden Two with a resident population that would be working in something high tech, generating capital and creating a new community that would be a fun place to live where there would be the highest standards for ethics and morality as defined by Rand.

Assuming the legal and technical issues are all worked out, why are things so much better inside the community?

Evil? What is evil about one's nature? It merely is what it is. I can study history and accept reality. There may be a time when this is no longer true, but I don't foresee it within my lifetime, nor of my children.

What is the "best within us?" It is overcoming these tendencies - but one must be ever vigilant whilst it is not.

Ah, so you believe that the nature of man is inherently an evil one? Then where - and what - IS "the best within us"?

He's just on page 1 - a preliminary outline. Every single person who asks this question goes thru a series of steps which are approximately the same. Give it a bit of time to ripen.

No single human or group of humans can create an "utopian" enclave of any size. The only one feasible is a single person, and even that would need to be very Spartan, as an individual would not be able to provide all the technology, even basic technology, to provide anything close to a "modern" - and by that I mean post dark ages - existence.

All of those services are already available. The builder already has developed the land to provide water, electricity etc etc. But behind the gated community you have a community that can put into action a life that is so much more richer than the status quo. The properties never hit the outside market so the only residents are the ones invited to live there.

Alas, you have left out the smaller cogs that allow the community to survive and thrive. Your basic services as water, food, waste, et cetera are not addressed. You need those skills so the high tech guys can do what they do best.
