Yep, just talked to a guy at work who had a similar experience, IRS contacted him to find out if he filed yet, which he did not, and they had a return on record. Refused to give him any info, but Turbo Tax did, some. The killer was he has had to pay them for the last 8 years, and this was a large refund, which got it flagged. The other point is to remember some ass wipe now has your SSN/Name?Address and that is pretty much all they need to jack you up forever with fake accounts, etc. Time for Lifelock... Better would be the ability to find where the breach occurred and sue the crap out of them, even if it is the damn feds, and have them pay damages to you, and maybe if they had that over their pinheads, they would take security seriously.

Compensation as they see fit, for their total inadequacy, as well as this shows they really didin't care about their "customers", now do they?

No, I had to pay my "fair share". The ID thief was filing for a refund. The IRS agent who identified the problem was quite sure the other person was fraudulent, but that problem keeps me from filing taxes electronically this year.

Did you ever get your refund?

Some years back I needed to go to the local SS office because I suspected that all of my involuntary SS payments up to that point had not been recorded; I was told that someone else was using my ss number...they wouldn't tell me who nor was I guaranteed that they would address the problem.

Come to think of it...that was the very day I woke up and wondered what else is screwed up in this world.

No, but I have seen the Queen of Hearts.
My ID was stolen in early 2015 when someone tried to file for a refund under my name. When I called the IRS in follow-up to their snail mail notification that there were two filings with my SSN and after I had proven my identity, the IRS refused to give me any info about the ID thief other than he/she had filed for a refund with my SSN. They did offer me free credit monitoring. Isn't that nice? Bless their hearts.
