Right, but if it's much better to say, "You made claim X, which is based only on race." It's wrong to make a request whose premise is an ad hominem attack. It's like, "Please set aside your wife-beating ways for the purposes of this discussion." Attack the ideas, not the person.
No, people THINK they're aware of racism. But in truth they're usually not, and just like to tell themselves that they are. Unless they're on the receiving end of persecution, most people generally forget about it, and need to be reminded of how social perceptions and institutionalized discrimination benefit them while hurting others.
