It seemed to me the NYT article was more effusive about his "novelist" qualifications (if you can call it that). Personnally, it seems he is just a way out politician, he can lie, cheat and steal, so he has all the qualifications. He also does not give a damn about the people he cheats. Perfect for DC, I be Hillary has him lined up already....

I would describe the NYT interview article as 'damning with faint praise'
in this case the praise is very faint.

I think AR knew it in the 50's and it has taken 60 years for them to get to the point they would admit it. Your points are valid, and as they said in the article, it is a prime reason why people like Trump are getting the support they are, the choice is between corrupt buffoons, or a rich buffoon. You still have a buffoon, but one is not a toxic as the other.

Early on with this administration my observations caused me to think that they were stupid. I changed my mind after a while when I recognized that nothing was being done to advance this nation.

Foreign affairs Iran , Cuba , shocking priorities

Reckless spending with arrogance and nothing to show for it.
News media bias has served the country poorly.
