we had to teach them to bathe...it was considered manly not to bathe in the middle east...and if you tried to brief or debrief them for a training mission at a respectable distance, you were insulting them...
The Iranians were slobs...too! I hated doing rounds up on their floor, in the barracks. They'd leave piles of their dirty laundry in the hallway for their "servants" to pick up and clean for them.
as an instructor pilot in the air force in the 70s, i trained military student pilots from Iran (under the shah), kuwaittis, iraqis, and others from the middle east...on the first friday night i would take them to officer's club and get them drunk...learned a lot about the middle eastern mind...they are all fanatics...and true believers..
For the Common Good? The Common Commoner? What in hell is the Common Good? Is it related to the Common Bad? Is there anything common about a thinking person or is he/she unique? Are we ants? Bees? Termites? Whatever happened to being Homo Sapiens. Man Who Understands? Hmm. Perhaps the "understands" part is missing.
I would love to think that I could leave $$ and it be used effectively. I think however, that its best to do what I would want to help the people that I care about learn to fish now instead of receiving fish after I am gone. If you get the analogy ok.

In my view they are directly comparable. Indeed, when the Soviets redefined the word "peace" as "when we own the world" (implying the intent to keep fighting us until then), they were following in the path of Islam.
The main difference is that most of the American people do not have the resolve to resist Islam that they did against Communism. And we may regret it.

I hope the kids and grandkids who get their quiet $14,000 per year appreciate the work that went into earning it and build it into something more. I've seen people who use those maximum excludable gifts to build wealth, and I've seen people just blow them.
i took an oath enlisting in the Air Force in 1970 to defend the Constitution against all enemies...foreign and domestic...it will stand until i take my last breath...
When anyone starts to bloviate "for the common good," I start looking around for stuff like swastikas or H's impaled with an arrow and eager-eyed people with puffed-up looks on their faces all ready to act, to act--to act!--or whatever the freak they hippity-hoppy FEEL froggy about doing. That's because what I'm really looking for is a quiet exit far and away from that particular loony bin so I may go where people actually THINK. Such as to the Gulch, for example,.
the analogy of comparing the cold war and terrorism taking place today is so far from reality it shows a lack of understanding on the writers part. during the 50 or so years of the cold war did the russians kill any of us? NO,NO, NO! However that is not the case with the muslims, is it? As for making plans when going on an outing, do it but also carry a side arm either concealed or open if it is legal where you live. Unfortunately it is expected that sooner or later what happens in europe will happen here and given the attitude of the present administration it will be twisted in a manner that we brought it upon ourselves. As for the common good, how about thinking of it as "my good"!
The real violence happens during the day, and its the government that does it. I have had more thefts from our own government than from any common thief- by far. When I was in college, the government threatened to turn me into a slave to fight in Vietnam. When I die, they will take what I havent been able to spend or give away quietly.
Yeah, I caught that line, too. I read it as: "You should stay in America. It's great. Why are we so violent?" Haha....
No...I am not sure I'll stay. In two days we will have forced medical treatment in California. Which type of force selected by the farmers will determine if this livestock stays on the farm.
We did our own laundry.

Crime actually went down compared to the time period in she's describing.
