So, was it his grammar or the idiocy? Since I cannot remember having read any of his comments, I really can't say. However, if you have not regretted using the ignore button, maybe I won't either. First, I'd like to see a comment.
I don't like censorship either. I do like to read commentary that is legible. However, I should be allowed to see and comment on a subject whether or not the grammar is correct. Hiding commentary for grammatical deficiencies assumes I am not capable of understanding the message. At times I am not, but it has nothing to do with the grammar. Besides, do we not have an ignore button? Should not we be allowed to decide what comments we like or dislike?
The military thinks it is the military. Back up a step All the military is under civilian control. So they ask for a place to do required or needed training.
Up pops little old Pagan. do their due diligence and present the case for the need (did you look up the list of current live fire sites?) and present it with one or more suggestions. One is reopen Vieques that's a throw away. So how about Camp Rilea in Oregon? Another throw away. You don't want one IN the USA because fo the massive amount of money to defend in courts of law. So thewhole 50 are out.
That leaves Territories. Nope for various good reasons population being one the prime points. You don't want to do a French thing and blast nukes all over the islands of the South Pacific. But you don't need to do so. Shell fire is like a huge bullet and easily controlled with direct fire the best and indirect needing close monitoring. It's called Forward Observers or from aircraft or whatever.
Rockets and missiles the same and here comes a break ..Don't need to fire full fledged war shots when practice rounds will do with much less cost. same with auto cannons. Bombs. Bombs are not smart bombs and much more controllable than WWII and they come in small practice versions too! Best of all no Kangaroo rats.
Now as to the residents who were pulled off the island some years ago for hurricanes. Naturally some want to go back. Ah hah! Who better to help lay out the target areas for the least possible damage especially to flora and fauna.
The decision is made entirely by civilians. Whose intererested? No votes but they can always say we kept it out of NW Oregon. Finally a choice is made. Up comes the objections. But who objects? AS I recall it was civilians that elected the Congress and the President who appointed the Service Secretaries. So who the hell do these civilians think they are? Just to embellish and finish your thought.
Who does the government think they are?
Your Masters.
Why?
You enabled them.
No dictator and no Autocrat ever took power. It was handed to them willingly - By civilians.
By the way what's the cost of an airplane ticket round trip to wonderland? You get a better return for the dollar in Samoa or Tonga.
The alternative is left with no choices..... that's your part to fill in.....
I usually write on a notepad and then transfer and then do an edit. Time is often a factor. But sometimes the obvious glaring error hits after complete posting. That's what Edit is for and if one has posted something to begin with it is always present.
Even so let's say it's a comment and the Edit has disappeared. One can always copy the body of the comment, use the delete function it returns you to the main post, find the same spot it will have a notification of a delete message. Do an new comment, paste the safe message and make corrections. So that's a useful safety valve for when one has really stepped on it big time which I certainly have.
However there is another function available that should be apparent to anyone - should be. This is not for OUC or Herb or any of the others with a few exceptions.
The human race developed a marvelous system some millennia ago . Open Closed. Off On. Light Dark. A more modern system is the little buttons or switches provided by modern technology. Should you hate the movie and are in a theater 'leave.' A comment to the theater manager might help. I've done that once. Same applies to a crummy concert. For radio and TV it's called two things. Channel Selector and the off on button. A third would be dump it in the trash such as a TV. Telephone etiquette which no longer exists does not mean answer right away or interrupt one's conversation with someone else. Most cell radio phones are filled with a lot of time wasting and interrupting garbage of little consequence. An individual in front of me is important. So now we arrive at posting and the Gulch. The convenient methods are go away, stay but do not read certain posteres most of the time, a real winner is the ignore button. I have several on my list and adding one more today. Can't waste the time on inconsequential nonsense. So as we used to say in the early days of Bulletin Board through phone wires (before internet) Plonk. It's a selective off button. Who? Some are rather apparent but others are due to my particular level in the wonderful world of objectivism. We have some very deep deep thinkers that go beyond my abilities. I use them a way of testing the nature of myself and my own development. It takes effort and dedication but eventually one reaches kilometer stones and can appreciate the discourse. I'm not at that level yet and no one is going to mistake me for Socrates nor Plato much less Aristotle.
But when you enter my little world of expertise don't cry foul. You weren't invited and the kitchen heat is unforgiving.
Siberia comes to mind, the middle east?...kill two birds with one stone. The thing that bugs us all...who the hell does the military, the creatures in government and every other government think they are?...is this the result of the collective ownership of all property of the earth?...bull crap.
I could care less about bats and freakin tree frogs. This island is valuable living space. I'd rather see DC used for military training...while the government is in session...this folks is the "new world order".
You would be wrong. The reason was for using complete articles by cut and paste past a certain boundary line. Nothing more. Nothing less. If you had read the posts you would have known that. Can't stand the heat don't get a kitchen job.
Exactly...I think, in spite of what others are saying now...he IS a valued member of this community. 1/2 the points we've gotten from our posts were from him...think about that...he also has kept us on track a bit. Am I the only one that see's his value?
Agree... but don't we get what MA is saying...do you not kind of understand in spite of a few mistakes? I can read around most mistakes...[including my own]...sometimes I wish they'd extend the edit time.
I was hoping 'I sank' would continue the conversation about the wonders of the Pacific Ocean. Most of mine has been as we call it the Specific Ocean for south of the line. With a fair amount in the northern half. There is a lot of difference between photos with a thin comment space and been there done that eyeball and hands on contact. How many have been to Suvarov or Suwarow Atoll in the North Cooks or smelled the stench of the Tuna plants in American Samoa? Or gone over to the real country of Samoa where they live Fa'a Samoa and not just talk about it. It's more than seeing the football teams and police wearing skirts. Like the hike up to the grave of 'Home Is The Sailor, home from the sea and the hunter home from the hills. Written for his own gravestone. Or dived the underwater tunnel transiting an island in Tonga and listened to the whales sing at the same time.
On the other hand any suggestions on where such training might better take place? Problems come with a new dimension when presented with solutions.
Suppose one of you said, "Why not use their other sites? They must be world wide."
Thank you. The answer is in having a place to recharge, converse, discuss, plan and refine plans and methods for ONE month of the year. The other eleven are devoted towards mission accomplishment. Not to forget correcting intentional and unintentional misconceptions such as Objectivism is a religion or objectivism is a political party or objectivism is something other than what it is . Add to that Subjective Superiority questioning without understanding Objectivism at all and making no attempt to do so. Damn! Or subscribing to the fictionary definitions of the other side no matter how ludicrous and historically false.
Sometimes you just have to take a break and learn to breathe again. Thus the Seven Day work week with one day for rest and recharging. We only point out the 11/12ths system. But then we don't print calanders and demand adherence.
I've seen threads ramble from one topic to another by several different contributors, most of them usually quite interesting. I think that it would be better to express your criticism rather than hiding the post. Especially when it is of one particular person. There have been religious converters in the Gulch, people whose thoughts are indistinct and garbled, but 99.999% of Gulch contributors surely get that. I LOVE insults, because people who do that are so easily roasted to a crisp. The thing that really disturbs me is when the posts which are hidden are all from the same contributor, and not all of them are bad.
It is certainly more in line with the AS readers who did understand the story line and where it led. So I have to agree completely. Even now I do that amongst the expat community. Would I rather live north of the border? Not so sure anymore. Were it not for the 2.5 times increase in value of my income as opposed to the 1/3rd or more (so far) cut in spending power since 2001 and especially 2008 I wouldn't have considered it at all. It certainly is far safer as an added plus. Good affordable medical care. Plenty of amenities. Year round just about sailing, fishing, diving, hiking etc. Many cultural and cultured events. NO US TV unless you sign up and pay extra for it. So it's close enough and enables contact on a 'net' and 'personal' basis. After all any good counter-revolution or revolution for that matter needs a safe operations and support base. Sorry for the poor grammar, irrelevant thoughts and lack of PC-rap. Try Google Translate - or a dictionary. That's sarcasm. It is not radical reasoning from the collectives.
I absolutely agree with you 100%!!! The people who run the Gulch have set it up so that it is very easy to correct errors. Sometimes in our haste to get our thoughts down, mistakes are made. Everyone does it, and it is even possible to miss one or two now and then, but on a regular basis - shame, shame. However, I really get troubled by blanking someone. It's too close to censorship. I know it's not, but still.....
Bowing and scraping and tugging my forelock? On the other hand using standard English is a bit of a handicap when communicating with the younger generation or are you referring to my refusal to use PC-rap speech?.
