Actually, the Southern states did follow an orderly process to leave the Union. However, since the U.S. refused to recognize their individual sovereignty, they didn't abandon several military facilities, Fort Sumter being one of them. South Carolina forces didn't fire on Fort Sumter until the Fort fired warning shots at foreign freighters, essentially blocking trade. Lots of mistakes on both sides. Lincoln's predecessor, Buchanan, botched the opportunity to end slavery by compensating plantation owners for the loss of their slave "property," claiming the price was too costly. The buyout of the slave owners would have been about 3% of the cost of the war that followed.

I'm not well-read concerning exactly how the Civil War began, but I don't recall the South going through the effort to leave the Union peacefully. The "hotheads" in the South essentially started a shooting war by firing on Fort Sumpter.

The author conveniently ignored the portion of the convention where the tyranny of the majority over the minority was addressed. Also if California can exit the US I propose that Louisiana has a better case since there is no provision in the Constitution for the President for purchasing territory for the US. We may want our Louisiana Purchase territory back.

Annex all land south and west of the San Andreas fault. Sell it to the highest bidder. The fault line makes for a perfect natural border.

Let California rejoin Mexico. A majority of their residents want to fly the Mexican flag and the other half thinks that's perfectly okay. Let them find out what real socialism is about with its government corruption, payoffs and income inequality.

Anyone espousing this in California must not realize that southern California is a desert and a majority of their electricity and water comes from outside of the state. So once they secede they can expect that both spigots will be turned off and that region of the state will revert back to its natural state. Next, since most riots seem to occur in predominantly liberal areas, you can expect all the major centers of population to meltdown and be burned to the ground. And would go from the 8th largest world economy to almost third world levels. They would learn that they would be better off staying within the Union than outside of it.

That only qualifies for 7% stupid respondents.
