Preppers in the Gulch?

I have been watching events unfold in the world and I have started to see that some of those in the "Prepper" movement might not be so crazy. I find it fascinating to surround myself with people that are the best at what they do. Some of these people have the best work ethic I have come across both in their profession and their craft. Which is another reason why I like to pop in and monitor the gulch from time to time. I'm interested in your thoughts on the matter and I look forward to where the conversation might end up.

Remember that the whole joke about "zombies" is actually code for what, in other places, have been dubbed "occupoopers." They are real human beings that we shall someday be forced to decide whether or not to kill.

Since the Second American Civil War's "shot heard 'round the world" has yet to be fired, we cannot yet talk openly of killing angry mobs of people. So we instead joke about "zombies" as if they are not real people.

I'll give my answer to your question in a separate post.

I think prepping for economic and natural disasters makes sense as well, and you have to do it no matter where you live. it's the hunkering down part that I see as possibly inefficient use of time. if the govt is in the equation, the equation will always have the same answer. If we are talking looting, pillaging, and raping then I'd agree with you.
that's sobering about the hoarders. seriously, if they lived next to me Id be over there in the middle of the night throwing Clorox around

Leave to where? With what? By what means? Full-on Shrugging is a process of much planning and preparations and it's very costly as well. Minus my sob stories, we do not have the means to leave, my parents are elderly and I will not leave them or my kids....so, at least for now, we have to stay put, which leaves us with staying aware, stocking up and hunkering down if need be. No other real options for us at the moment that would be practical or not actually work towards are own detriment. And I don't think Preppers are crazy...what's the harm in it? The ones I think are bat shit crazy are the hoarders...trash everywhere, piles of newspapers, stacks of dirty dishes, dead cats under seat cushions.... THAT'S crazy. Preppers are harmless.

somewhere in here I posted the (real) prep list from the CDC on zombie apocalypse. :) I think it will be a combination of stuff. hyper inflation leading to shortages of essential goods or services. Gas is likely to be a big one. I say, go back and look at late 80s eastern block. similar kids of shortages for us. shortages also occur due to regulations passed, where a weakened economy doesn't hold up well under dumb, short sighted laws. Also, countries with stronger currencies buy up things we have always relied on having around:parts for cars, trucks, generators, etc. But team hyper inflation with a large natural disaster and you will not see adequate response. Like you're seeing with Sandy rebuilding. I would also look back at natural disasters and see which companies tended to lead response and rebuild. are those companies near your town? and lastly, I would get the heck away from a city. whatever happens, it will be much worse in a city, in my opinion.

WoW! I seems that I struck a chord and that there are several amongst us who see the writing on the wall.

What would you see as the most possible scenario? Zombie Apocalypse (HaHa), Collapse of the dollar, or just utter fail to function like seen in Atlas Shrugged. The latter I believe will take quite some time. There are still far to many willing to prop up society in order to make money.

Captains of industry now days are not the same men and women that Rand wrote about. Most are manicured and pedicured lobbyists who achieve their success through the board room and not from actually running their companies.

Very nice piece of work & a good choice for storage. I have been storing things for a few years now, if for no other reason than the price of food going up. Canning supplies, seeds, batteries, candles, etc. One of my secrets, so if there is a need for it, no one will be the wiser.

The thing about prepping -- and by that I mean prepping RATIONALLY, not the kind being done by the nutcases who are getting all of the Press -- is that it very much depends on where you live.

What are the risks you need to mitigate? Here in Colorado we don't need to prepare against a tsunami -- but in the Pacific Northwest where I grew up, it's pretty much the #1 risk now that The Volcano has gone back to sleep.

In some places, it's tornadoes. Where I live, it's forest fires. Where you live, it's water.

    And so on.

    that's great!
white rice? I'd mix it up a bit with rice a roni if that were the case. For me, storing water is an issue. I live in the desert and short of a mini desalinization plant, my camping water filter is only part of the equation.

"Is it different from 'survivalist'?" Probably not.

But in the MSM words have no meaning, other than what some libtard wants them to mean at that moment.

As an example, look at the myriad meanings that have been assigned to the phrase "assault weapon" -- which has no definition -- and the number of times we've been told that an "assault rifle" -- a weapon which has been illegal to own since the 1930's -- was used and/or brandished at this or that event.

The definition of "prepper" will change tomorrow, or next week, at the whim of a libtard journalist (which I prefer to pronounce with the German "J") anyway.

Yep, and that's exactly what the KGB propagandists wanted us to believe. Their agents who were writing articles for The New York Times and others did an excellent job of deleting the American people's will to fight.

So the Preppers of yore were ostracized for (correctly) believing that nuclear war IS survivable, and worth surviving. The only thing that's changed from then to now is the focus of the ridicule.

I first heard the word describing that Sandy Hook monster's mother. Is it different from survivalist? I do not understand the the concept of "hunkering down" why not leave? but being prepared for crisis is just forward looking. there are many signs a crisis(es) could happen. I have not yet bought any astronaut food :)

FWIW I consider myself a prepper.

But I don't fit the stereotype. Most of the people I meet & see in the "prepper" subculture are IMO batshit insane.

My in-laws built a fallout shelter during the cold war. It mainly stayed foot deep in water. Even if one survived the initial effects of nuclear war, I doubt if many people would be able to cache enough supplies to outlast dangerous radiation levels.
