Mulligan here. I decided to strike in 2003. Moved to a very rural area. We are well stocked for all of life's necessities. We can our own food. Are well armed. We are not so much "preppers" but simply living the kind of life one must lead in a very remote area. If unrest does happen, it will probably begin with economic issues. Hyperinflation after the binge of printing money. Food will become expensive. Petroleum exhorbitant. Self sufficiency is necessary, even in the absence of unrest.

I live at Galt's Gulch (I really do). Have been an Objectivist since 1971 (40 of my 60 years). Over those 40 years, I have read most everything Ayn Rand wrote. My home is in a very remote area of southern Arizona where I moved when I decided to strike in 2003.

It makes me sad (and other things) that so few of us seem to give a shit, or even notice. On one hand I want to shake sense into people and on the other hand I think it's futile to even waste my efforts so I don't bother.

Unfortunately, none of them really provide what my wife and I really want: Limited Gov't, All the communists out of the local, State & Federal levels, both elected and unelected, including the public schools.

One thing is certain, America is the last stand for Freedom. I feel like we (in the Gulch) are like the ones who fought at The Alamo. Another thing to store up is protein powder. It comes in nice plastic containers and will be a good sustainable food if you find yourself in a disaster of some kind.

I was just at the grocery store and an old lady was behind me buying half a cart full of bulbs and I said, "Oh, good idea there with the bulbs." She didn't hear me so I let it go. Also, I just did a walk thru on a newly built house (of my friend's) a couple days ago and ALL of the lights in the house have those stupid pig tail lights in them and I said, "Well, those fricken things should be the first to go when you move in." She said, "Oh, believe me, it's first thing on Jeff's list, he's already said so." My reply? "I knew I loved him for a reason." Stupid pig tail light bulbs!!

I know it's hard and you have to give up a lot...and I also know what you're referring to. (I'm very sad for you...and I'd be insane over it, but I totally respect your choices and sticking to them.I hope things improve quickly). None of us knows for sure how all of this will play out or when... we have some ideas and can speculate all day long, but no one knows for sure.

If you live in a city, it might be wise to leave (to somewhere that you can grow your own food). There are probably certain U.S. states from which it would be wise to leave.

But most of us don't have the zillions of dollars to do what Doug Casey has been advising his clients to do for several years now. THOSE people are the Midas Mulligans of the post-Apocalypse. We will need them when the time comes to rebuild.

As I posted elsewhere in this discussion, the "most possible scenario" depends on where you live.

Civil unrest will happen. Societal collapse is already happening. And we have a pretty good idea what that looks like because it has happened several times throughout history.

The short version: it bears little resemblance to the fantasies of the nut cases who are the bulk of the "prepper" movement.

Food production, trade and commerce will continue (but probably not with U.S. fiat currency -- my own prediction is that silver will be the new currency). Energy and transportation will exist, but be problematic. Defense against food-seeking mobs will turn some places into war zones and be unnecessary in others.

Above all, each of us needs to THINK. Listen to Dmitry Orloff's address to the Long Now Foundation called "Best Practices for Societal Collapse" (I don't have a link but it shouldn't be hard to find). Some of his experience is USSR-specific and won't happen here, but most of his advice is right on the money.

After listening to his lecture, THINK about how all of his points will apply in your locale, and prepare accordingly.

you know if it's right for you or not. and since it is a very individual choice, it's not even worth debating questions like means or family. I will say this about my own situation. we gave up alot to do it. income, savings, being close to family. I'll tell you about (not here in the gulch) a hard decision I'm going through right now regarding one of the very reasons you list for not shrugging. but regardless if it's right for you or not, I'll bet there are many in here who could try it on, and just don't think that way, for lots of reasons-like this is my country and I won't let the bastards take it from me. and that's a perfectly valid feeling. I just don't believe it is effective in removing the bastards.or the zombies.

If you have the means to leave then, yes, staying and hunkering is inefficient...if you don't have the means then the leaving becomes the inefficient part.
(Even Clorox wouldn't kill the creepy crawlies in the hoarder houses.) I always feel sorry for their neighbors. ig!
