Power

Those of you who are ancient like me, might remember Ted Sorenson, an often quoted member of the Kennedy Administration. He was questioned by THIS WEEK magazine as to why he was a counselor to President Kennedy, when his pay and benefits didn't come close to what he was making as a top exec. at General Motors. Here ia his answer: "Outside of government one can have influence but can't wield power. My work for General Motors is challenging and stimulating, but it doesn't begin to compare with the satisfaction I had as counsel to President Kennedy." And there you have it. Some men are willing to give up wealth and influence in order to wield power.

Is what Mr. Sorenson expressed a view that is merely his and not that of the majority of those who work for government? I doubt it.From what I have experienced in any of my dealings with government, no matter how small or how great the amount of power wielded by a government employee, they will strive to use it to it's fullest extent any dealings in which their services are required. Which accounts for the animosity to be found whenever a citizen tries to deal with a government employee. It doesn't matter if it has to do with utility regulation, taxes, permits and licenses or you name it. Everyone has a horror story to tell about dealing with the government on one matter or another that must go through the hands of a Ted Sorenson type, no matter at what level.

Oh yes this cartoon was of that nature and quite funny . Poopdeck had a super sized tool , that he used in one pane to break down a door.
    He would say
" I am going to give it the full length , err me ......."
We had some good laughs for sure.

I'm sure you do. As do most in this forum. But sometimes I wonder how some would react if they were offered a Mafia job (Non violent) such as bookkeeping or legal at sum many times what you could earn otherwise. To have no money worries and have great wealth is a temptation hard to turn down. I was offered such a position but I still live in a 4 bedroom ranch and drive a chevy.

I once worked for a wholesaler who dealt with the AFL/CIO I got to know the Union bosses pretty well. Including a lawyer who was a childhood friend. Plus the crime syndicate was so interwoven with the union that you couldn't tell a Mafia boss from a union boss.

Being in business is tougher than being naked and afraid or gambling the last of your chips in Las Vegas.

They attempt to be timely and hip, but all they wind up doing is showing their ignorance, in often very embarrassing ways.

Very true. I could tell you some pretty scary stories. I have told the tale many times of the city water inspector who came to my store because we had the electrical inspectors going over some equipment we were installing. He was hoping to get in on the bonanza of having to rewire and payment fot new permits.

In the old days beyond (almost) recall, there were actual porno comic books in small format where each panel was a page. the size of the panel. Popular characters were usually Popeye and Olive, Dagwood and Blondie, and Mary Worth. How do I know? Well, I was interested in comic book characters even in those days of yesteryear.

I have known some good, noteworthy individuals in government service, but sadly most seem to have a dictator streak that needs to be satisfied by the occasional abuse of others. Large companies are not an exception, because any large bureaucracy of individuals requires some to have power over the acts of others. The difference is that on occasion, a stupid, small minded act can cost money, which can lead to punishment in a corporate setting. Government unions, on the other hand, protect even the most venal and stupid from consequences. One of the worst cases I've heard was two senior executives in the Arizona VA were found to have embezzled over $400,000 from their budget. Were they punished? Hell no! Under the rules governing the VA, civil authorities did not have jurisdiction, and the "matter" was to be settled by a VA ethics board. After a severe tongue lashing, the miscreants were demoted without a cut in pay, and were authorized to seek a return to their management positions within 90 days. They were not required to return the money they stole, either. This was one of many incidents that led to President Trump changing the rules to allow the removal of such criminals, and allowing civil authorities to deal with them.

It's a colorful descriptive language we have .An example of onomatopoeia perhaps , for the word goons.
A buddy happened upon back in the day, a very blue copy of poop- deck pappy and some of the sayings became a kind of private joke in our crowd.
Regardless "I will gladly pay you Thursday for a hamburger today"

There is a lot of truth in your assessments but power goes way over the top when the individual who seeks and gains the power is also already independently wealthy. Low level Gov. employees do allow the powers of their positions to go to their heads but they still need their jobs so it is curtailed to some degree. Million, Multi and Billionaires become scarily obsessed with power to often very dangerous degrees. Hollywood idiots are a prime example along with the late night comedians who are anything but funny and none are leaders of anything but their make believe roles.

I love the word "goons" as properly used as you did. By the way, did you know that the word was invented in a Popeye comic strip to describe goofy looking alien creatures who were just thugs.

    Good Point.
But that doesn't excuse them, those masters of the universe with no self esteem.

I think you're right. In any case, I can attribute 90% of my unremembered authors to Heinlein and probably be right.

As to the wealth issue, two points: Obama left the White House a multi-millionaire having never worked a productive job in his entire life, and we now have trying for the governorship of IL a man who has inherited billions but failed at his attempt to buy Obama's senate seat. Seems he is desperate for the kind of power Sorenson talked about.

The bureaucrat's greatest power (especially at lower levels) is his "NO" power. You can't do anything if you have to ask because it is either not expressly allowed or it is expressly prohibited.

I've always thought that those who want to exercise power over others is to fill a deficiency in their own personal identity. They are "second handers."

    Herb,
THEY ARE ALL ted sorenson types, but the vast majority never worked in private industry as he did so they can not reflect on knowing the difference.
