Not cleanining forests does let them return to their natural state. But large fires are also their natural state - those are how nature “cleans” the forest. You can have a natural forest that burns or a manually cleaned one that mostly doesn’t. You can’t have both.

The fact that environmentalists have successfully stopped logging, which thinned the forest growth, prevented the clearing of underbrush, which is tinder for the fires, prevented the cutting of firebreaks, all under the wish to return the forests to "their natural state," might have just a little bit to do with the raging fires in California. The liability issue for PG&E should be to blame the state for creating hazardous conditions and not allowing them to create tree-free areas around their power lines.
