jbrenner made a suggestion of possibly an island near Australia. I looked at a couple of other locales for a few more choices. Here they are:

Tahiti group. Nice size, price unknown at this time. Looks pretty nice and completely undeveloped. Only drawback is leasehold status. Wonder if freehold could be negotiated?

Here's an Aussie one. Couldn't find too many pix but looks interesting and the price is not forbidding.

Another in the Fiji group. A hundred times smaller and costing a fourth of the first one. Less b4tb IMO

Here is one in the Fiji group. A bit high but, Holy Crap!!, 10,000 acres. Lots of room for development. Some spectacular photos in this one.

Earthquakes are one thing. The hydrogen sulfide from volcanoes is another. Even if an eruption doesn't wipe your building out, it would wipe out enough vegetation on the island, and perhaps people, that it probably isn't our best option.

Thanks, katrinam41. I have one student working on an early detection kit for Alzheimer's disease. I get it. My grandfather died of Alzheimer's, and my dad is starting to show the first symptoms.

jb--I have the desire, but not enough knowledge yet, so I sit and monitor and participate when I can. I am learning a lot at the Gulch and I plan on learning a LOT more--if I can help with a bit of research, I would be delighted, as long as you know that I am caring for my Alzheimer's husband and my time to do those things I love isn't always as much as I would like.

Looked for it on Google maps. Bay of Chiriqui brought the view to a bay on the Atlantic side. I could find no island by that name in that vicinity. Could you look, please? You may have better luck than I.

"With those caveats, are you still a participant? "
I'm a strong supporter of the idea. I would set up surveys, find out how to set up a 501c3 or whatever structure, but it's very very limited unfortunately. I'm willing to goof off less on this site to do some actual work on this project though.

"provide a welcome haven from the onrushing disaster."
I think we're approaching an onrush of amazing accomplishments, changes as big as the industrial revolution. The resulting wealth will hopefully propel people to new places, Gulches of sorts, where new ideas will come from new situations. My kids get a lecture when they complain about not having a certain video they want available on-demand on a phone. Their kids will have things way more amazing.

This is the watershed time when everyone started carrying a phone camera. Maybe in a few hundred years there'll be a turning point when aging is drastically reduced or cured, and changes of a plummeting death rate and birth rate ripple through the world.

So I want a Gulch for a different reason. I'm willing to put some very limited time and effort into it if I can help.

CG, based on current research (and input), you get half of what you are asking for. Though, being Fiji, a resort component can be had pretty easily. However, IMO, this is to be a sanctuary for those of us who wish to actively remove from the idiocy we see here. Yes, tourism is an attractive source of income but you become vulnerable to what you are escaping. With those caveats, are you still a participant?

If we don't put in the effort, nothing will be accomplished and a great dream will go aglimmering. I, for one, am excited that such a thing could come to fruition and provide a welcome haven from the onrushing disaster. A lot here talk a good game, now it's time to start getting serious.

True, there are sideliners, but I expected more people here in the Gulch than I see participate.

I did not mean this to be a thought experiment. If we can get sufficient interest, I am totally serious about it, but if we don't get enough interest, then I will make my own escape plans if the situation gets that dire. I thought it would be nice to have some likeminded neighbors for the time when my mind and body are no longer able to keep up with my ambition.

Let me look at it. I'm thinking (and I could be wrong) NZ is a somewhat like Australia or UK. Too much infringement. But I'll look.

At this point, interest level for a physical Atlantis is not even close to where it needs to be to make it worth investing a lot more effort.

Oops. I know next to nothing about surveys. I can devote time to it with some guidance. I'd really like to see this come off. kh and db seem pretty knowledgeable. Wonder if they can give me some help? (Hint, hint)
