I remember a discussion somewhere about what would be a long term, possibly for millennia, storage for data that would not go obsolete like many of the ways computer data can now only be accessed by extreme difficulty. Things that I have gone through are 8.5 inch, 5.25 inch, and 3.5 inch floppies. Nearly gone are BETA and VHS tapes alone with earlier storage on punch cards, paper tape, wire and tape, etc. Soon CDs and DVDs will be gone and none of the mentioned will be readable after rather short periods of time, even if the equipment to do so still would exist. My argument was for Good old paper which is easily readable but has large storage space problems.

As for crashes, my brother in LA had his computer die with the latest Kindle book that he was writing. He may be able find it in the Amazon Cloud if he can learn enough to get to it. He just uses a computer and has not desire to learn any of the background stuff that makes things continue to work.

Over the years, I started with an Altair 8800, I have had many data loss events, too busy to do backups believing that it was too much work to create, store, and later find the right back up. Many times I had paper printouts, but large programs are hard to reenter.

I recall that it was stated in one episode, maybe #19 (had a crash and lost all my history and windows in UBUNTU Linux), that no recurrent nova had been shown to be a binary system as it is theorized to be. The statement ( to the best of my 79 year old memory) was that no two stars had been resolved or wobble detected in any of the recurrent novae.
This paper uses spectroscopic date to give mass estimates and other calculations for the pair of stars in U Scorpii which was in the list of recurrent novae in the episode.

We seem to have reached a level of stupidity, where people hear CO2 and think bad. They no longer seem to get tht plants thrive on CO2, and they release osygen. Then they think that limiting science to a few measurements, and not factoring the SUN, which is in control, will give them real facts. Not going to happen, incomplete data, skewed data. The UN know we are not going to turn off Earth in 12 years. Not sure AOC or Beto believe what they are saying, or just think we are stupid. They don't seem to be doing any real homework to seek truth and facts. .

Out of curiosity, was the conference local (where you could perhaps have taken public transportation) or would you have had to travel any significant distance (thereby adding to the problem) just to get there?

Some of it isn't misuse of data, but abuse and torture of it. Curiously the older the year is, the colder it gets - as long as it is post-Little Ice Age. Not even kidding, though I wish I were. They've not been able to keep up the "warmer every year" assertion so they've come up with a colder past. The raw data, what was actually recorded, shows a slight cooling trend for over 80 years.

A few days ago I received an invitation to a climate change conference. I probably should have responded that I was among the 3% who disagree.

Scare tactics unfortunately work extremely well for duping uninformed people into giving more power to those who claim to have the solution that will save them from doom. The American leftists/statists are milking this cow to the maximum. Empirical science is a wonderful thing, but its practitioners are still flawed humans with biases and agendas that cloud their conclusions.

Lots of that, certainly. They focus on the small things claiming a "butterfly effect" but fail to address the elephant in the room: the Sun.

Lots and lots of this going on. There was the East Anglia scandal where researchers were found to be inventing data, then there is all of the temperature data where the collection points are next to parking lots - which artificially increases the measured temperatures.

Yup - plenty of that going around because they have to keep up the chirade so they can keep duping people in government positions to keep paying them.

There is the bad science- emphasis on a property of one gas in selectively reflecting radiation, other gases have the same property and more so. This property has no perceptible effect on heat transfer to the earth's surface.

Misuse of data- data on sea level rises in some places and ignoring falls in other places, ignoring land subsidence due to mining and water extraction.
Fraud- videos of island governments meeting below water, the islands in the news are actually growing in area! Oceans falling, or, land rising?
Widespread fabrication of temperature data by the national weather bureaus of several nations.

Misuse of science- giant tranches of money go to finding evidence for the myths, or more correctly, 'trying' to find, and there is fabrication of evidence.

Apart from science, good, bad, fraudulent, there are political motivations which out-shout any real evidence.
