You have to wonder how much was ever real. Supposedly, CDC death rates for things like flu, heart disease etc are all down, and that the "covid" deaths mysteriously balance it out. While there are a few people who question what grandma died from, a lot get all weirded out defensive if you question it, screaming how you don't care and that this is real because Aunt Judy died from it. Yet we have documented cases of deaths being labeled covid after people either ran into a wall on a motorcycle, or died of lead poisoning.

I guess I'm just not spun up enough these days. In my 20 years in the military, one of the standard things I had to carry was my shot record. Since we could be given orders that required travel to foreign countries, we had to be able to show we'd been inoculated to both be prepared for any diseases in any area of concern, and to meet any country's vaccination requirements. I had a sizable list of inoculations, including for bubonic plague. The only one we didn't get beforehand was for yellow fever, since the vaccination was only effective for about six months, which meant we got it just before departure if we were traveling to a country where the disease was prevalent.

It would seem the EU has gotten careless with regard to inoculations compared to when I was in service. Back before there was an EU, there were a number of countries that had specific inoculation requirements for travelers, so shot records were common for civilian tourists as well.

What has changed is citizens' trust in their governments. Where in the past such measures were seen as a sign of the government caring for the health and well being of its citizens, today it's seen as a result of a number of nefarious motives: either it's a way to line the pockets of politicians in league with Big Pharma; or a way to actually spread disease instead of combat it; or simply to condition us to accept whatever the government dictates. Maybe I'm just not that cynical, or receptive to conspiracy theories.

I visited frequently in the 80's on business/pleasure. Returning a few times since then to visit a friend has reinforced just how far down (what is purported to be) the culture has fallen into what I view as perversity.
Even at its best, the longest I ever stayed was about 3 weeks and I was anxious to leave after 2 weeks I can't imagine putting up with the crowds of surly people all the time.
Of course, that opinion is from one who was not exposed to it while growing up. If everyone's livelihood is dependent on the perverse, thieving 'financial services industry' one may be unknowingly accepting of perversion.
