California wants to own its own refinery! What would Ellis Wyatt think?

California policymakers are considering state ownership of one or more oil refineries to ensure a reliable supply of gasoline as the number of refineries in the state declines.

An oil industry trade group questions whether the state would have the expertise to effectively run a refinery, citing a lack of “understanding of the industry and how it works.”

Russia. China. Venezuela. Iran. More than a dozen countries make gasoline at state-owned refineries.

Could California be next on the list?

There have been add-ons to refineries in the US since 1979, but no new ones built. Yes, the government regs are overwhelming.

Perhaps the shortage of refineries is due to GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS THAT ARE TOO EXPENSIVE TO MEET for a private sector company/

Me dino just started to wonder why socialism is run by stupid people. That wonderment stopped instantaneously. in me own dino reasoning way.
It is because stupid people both like and adopt socialism. Americans should know better.
Or maybe they don't because I went to school mostly during the Fifties and the Sixties.

Florida, being a relatively free state, has the will and ability to do such things. NY, being a more Marxist state, is highly unlikely unless it creates a body that spews the propaganda "all is well in NY!" - oh wait, it already has the Democrat party in charge! LOL

While I used to teach Petroleum Refining, all my students were international students because we haven't built a new refinery in America since 1979.

Russia has around 30 large oil refineries, with the majority owned by the state-owned company Rosneft, which operates the most refineries in the country, including major ones like the Syzran, Tuapse, and Ryazan refineries; other significant players include Lukoil and Gazprom Neft
Among these refineries, Perm Refinery, Kstovo Refinery, and Volgograd Refinery are privately owned by Lukoil, Yaroslavl Refinery is by Slavneft,
Russia has been moving away from Communism after being one of the most abused country by the deep state in the world . Hence the BRICS creation

allosaur has hit the nail on the head, again.
Now if I was one y.o. I could agree, that to preserve an essential service from the greed of capitalists, take it into public ownership.

Being somewhat over one y.o., and having the events of California fresh in mind, if nothing else, I have a different view.
The government controlled the water supply. There had been a previous season of very good rainfall but vast quantities of water were sent out to sea. When water was needed for fire fighting, reservoirs were empty.

To teach about socialism by all means go to Rand, Hayek, Sowell and Friedman, but
Do not forget the disaster of the Los Angeles fires of January 2025.

Yeah, man. It took me four or five times to stare at it and to click on edit so I could write it as if I was once again passing through the Sixties. Groovy.

DOGE is at the federal level. The states can still play the games required to steal from the people in the name of the people. The Marxist Democrat governor here in NY (along with the Marxist Democrat legislature) has managed to get legislation passed to levy taxes and fees on energy producers to create a 75 billion dollar "super fund to mitigate the effects of climate change". IMHO, it's a scam to funnel money to left wing causes at the state level to offset the DOGE effect shutting down such scams at the federal level. New Yorkers are just now getting their first utility bills with the hidden cost showing up and you can hear the howling. I tell complainers if they voted Democrat they are getting what they voted for and the rest of us are getting screwed because of their idiocy - vote accordingly the next time!
